Buhl council accepts $20 donation, declines city funding for newspaper-digitization and school-ads, and joins snack-drive

The Buhl City Council handled several community-support items on Aug. 5. The council authorized Resolution 25-31 to accept a $20 monetary donation from Mary's Lake Street Floral (Chisholm) to the city's Recreation Board; roll call recorded Kealy, Loeffler, Towner and Mayor Matthews voting Aye with Teska-Erickson absent.
The council declined to provide city financial assistance to the Eveleth Heritage Society's proposal to participate in the Minnesota Digital Newspaper Hub project, an initiative described to cost roughly $800,000 to digitize approximately 700,000 pages of historic newspapers. Mayor Matthews and other council members described the effort as laudable but questioned whether city financing was appropriate; a motion to approve city financial assistance failed unanimously.
Council also considered participating in advertising in the Mesabi Tribune's Area High School Sports sections at a total not-to-exceed $112.50. A motion by Councilor Kealy, supported by Councilor Towner, resulted in a 2-2 tie and the motion did not prevail. Members commented that such advertising requests raise questions about appropriate use of city funds.
Finally, the council approved participating as a donation collection site for B2 Bank's Back-to-School Snack Drive running Aug. 1–Sept. 15, 2025; councilors noted no city funds were requested and the motion carried unanimously.
