Buhl council accepts 2024 audit, approves sewer-lateral ordinance and EMS Hall HVAC; accepts donations and makes appointments

Buhl — The Buhl City Council on June 10 accepted the city’s FY2024 independent financial audit and took a string of administrative and infrastructure actions. Bonnie Sterle of Sterle & Company told the council the audit resulted in an "Unmodified Audit Opinion," and the council voted unanimously to accept the auditor’s report and supplemental information.
The council approved a new ordinance to regulate sewer laterals in Chapter 52 of the city code, a measure staff described as intended to reduce inflow and infiltration in the sanitary system. Councilor Denise Kealy moved the ordinance; the motion passed unanimously.
Councilors also approved replacing the EMS Hall air-conditioning system with a 24,000 BTU Daikin mini-split unit to be supplied and installed by Mesaba Heating & Air Conditioning for up to $4,841. Council discussion noted the expenditure is unbudgeted and could reasonably be funded from Ambulance Fund reserves.
The council accepted several in-kind and monetary donations for the city’s Independence Day events — including contributions from local businesses — by roll call vote. The meeting record lists donations from Papa Zzz's Pizza, CEC Theatres, McDonald’s and Jubilee Foods; the council also accepted a $1,000 donation from the Buhl Curling Club, Inc., to support the community center. The council appointed Stuart Lehman to the Buhl Economic Development Authority and approved the hiring of Jaeden Loeffler as a seasonal beach attendant (pending pre-employment requirements) and the placement of Nathaniel Pederson as a volunteer firefighter (pending testing and paperwork).
Administratively, the council authorized staff to pay normal and necessary bills that come due before the next regular meeting on July 8, 2025. Councilors also formed a Leadership Committee (Mayor James Matthews and Councilor Denise Kealy) to review the Clerk/Treasurer position description and compensation ahead of the current agreement’s December 31, 2025 expiration.
During citizen comment, resident Cheryl Kivi requested a standing monthly agenda item updating the public on the water tower project. City staff earlier reported the Water Main Loop bid release is planned for July 8 and that additional water tower materials are being prepared for the Minnesota Department of Health.
The meeting concluded with council discussion of planning, parking and blight enforcement, and economic development activity. The meeting adjourned at 8:47 p.m.
