Forestry updates: committee hears of ~$4.5M in active timber sales, trail rehab and DNR road work

County forestry and DNR staff provided written updates to the Sawyer County Land, Water & Forest Resources Committee on Aug. 7, 2024.
Greg Peterson told the committee there were seven active timber sales for July with a combined sale value now estimated at approximately $4.5 million. Peterson said staff have completed or continue several ATV/UTV trail rehabilitation projects. He also reported one case of oak wilt in Seeley Hills, which county crews treated.
Randy Neumann read a report from Ms. LaReau summarizing motorized trail activity and said use remains consistent and heavy; the report cited a nine-county user survey with over 2,000 responses that staff will begin compiling. A written report from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said the DNR will continue road improvements to the Parks Farm access road off the Thornapple grade in the Township of Winter to preserve public access to a wildlife management area. The Draper Road Project’s Sustainable Forestry Grant application has been signed and submitted with required supporting documents, according to the DNR report.
The committee did not take formal action related to timber sale contracts or the grant application at the Aug. 7 meeting; follow-up or implementation steps were not specified in the minutes.
