Stewart Haney was sworn in as mayor of Tyler on June 24 after the City Council canvassed the June 13 runoff results and adopted the certificate of election.
A judge administered the oath of office, and Haney told the council and audience he was "truly an honor to get to represent the city of Tyler in this capacity," thanked Mayor Warren for his service and said he looked forward to working with staff and council.
City Clerk Cassandra Brazier read the election returns for the runoff (John Nix 3,841; Stewart Haney 5,175) before the oath. The council formally canvassed the returns and approved the canvass by voice vote.
Haney referenced his five years on the council and acknowledged family members in the audience, saying he would "get to work" with council and staff on behalf of citizens. The outgoing mayor, Warren, offered remarks earlier in the meeting thanking staff and citizens for six years of public service.
The meeting continued with regular agenda business after the oath; no additional decisions tied to the mayoralty were made at this session.
