The Wellesley Select Board voted unanimously on Jan. 27 to approve a $500,000 supplemental appropriation from Free Cash to the Department of Public Works to cover the remainder of the winter, including overtime and equipment costs tied to recent and anticipated storm response.
DPW Director Dave Cohen reported the department had responded to about 15 storm events this fiscal year and the most recent storm produced approximately 20 inches of snow, requiring 35 to more than 40 hours of continuous staff response and resulting overtime and double‑time pay. He told the Board the supplemental would cover an anticipated weekend storm and other cold‑weather response expenses.
The motion passed 5–0 (Aufranc, Freiman, Largess, Sullivan Woods, Ulfelder). The Executive Director noted the supplemental would come from Free Cash. Board members thanked DPW staff for their response to the recent storms.
Implementation: the supplemental was approved to provide immediate funding; the Board did not amend departmental operations. The DPW will proceed with snow‑removal operations planned for commercial areas the next evening as previously announced.
