Resident urges lower speed limit on US 23 after crash; council says it will investigate

At the Nov. 4 Village of South Bloomfield council meeting, resident Shawna Huston asked council to consider lowering the speed limit near the Sheetz area on US 23 to 35 mph after her daughter was injured in a crash involving a driver she said was traveling 55 mph.
Huston described the injuries and how they have affected her daughter's life and said she would like the council to look into changing the posted limit. Village Administrator Joe Allen replied that "the village has already started looking into it" but that the effort had been put on the back burner because of other projects.
Police Sgt. Michael Maynard separately reported that the department has seen an increase in crashes coinciding with paving on US 23. Maynard said officers will continue enforcement and he plans to visit a local police academy to aid recruitment and staffing, actions he said could improve response and traffic enforcement capacity.
No formal motion or ordinance change was recorded at the meeting; the council and staff indicated staff would investigate and report back. Administrator Joe Allen also noted Columbia Gas will relocate a gas line at the US 23 and 316 intersection and that final detour and closure details will depend on ODOT confirmations.
