Board tables technology handbook after debate over districtwide iPad sentence

The Manhattan‑Ogden USD 383 board voted to table its technology handbook after Board member Katie asked staff to remove a sentence in Appendix A that states the district supplies every student with an iPad.
Katie told the board she wanted flexibility on device strategy and home use, noting parent concerns about screen time and that some teachers had suggested alternative device types for higher grades. "Taking this out doesnt mean they dont get one, but it doesnt mean were stuck year after year saying every year everybody gets an iPad," she said.
Staff and teaching and learning leaders urged caution about abrupt changes and said earlier surveys had shown teacher support for one‑to‑one device access. Dr. Ribble and other staff said they would review the handbook language and suggested broader edits to avoid locking the district into a specific device model.
Katie withdrew an immediate motion to approve with her amendment and instead moved to table item 9.2 to the next meeting; the motion to table carried 4-0. The board asked staff to return suggested language and an impact summary to the board before final action next week.
