Planning Commission approves Boys & Girls Club expansion at 808 Monterey Street

The Bakersfield Planning Commission on June 18 approved Conditional Use Permit 25-0041 for a Boys & Girls Club expansion at 808 Monterey Street that will add a community care facility — the Life & Workforce Readiness Center — on roughly 0.85 acres adjacent to the existing Armstrong Youth Center.
Assistant Planner Yazeed Algary presented the application on behalf of the applicant (Ortiz Melby Art Incorporated representing the Boys & Girls Club of Bakersfield). Algary summarized the request: the project site is zoned R2 and C1 with general plan designations HMR and GC, and the proposed facility would serve an additional 500 teens and young adults. “Staff recommends approval of the project,” Algary said.
The public hearing was opened and no speakers stepped forward in favor or opposition. Commissioners discussed broader zoning implications: Commissioner Kiter used the application to highlight how Old Town Kern’s overlay zoning sometimes forces long-standing community uses into discretionary review and urged that the upcoming general plan/zoning code update consider mixed-use neighborhood realities.
A motion to approve the conditional use permit was made, seconded and passed. The clerk recorded Commissioners Strickland, Core and Brar as absent for the vote.
