Denton board adopts formal snow removal policy with response-time standards

The Denton Board of Trustees adopted a written Snow Removal Policy on Dec. 1 that sets explicit response times for clearing snow and ice across the village and assigns enforcement responsibility to the village maintenance supervisor and the board chair. Trustee Doug Rosekrans moved to adopt the policy; Trustee Amanda Fangmeier seconded the motion and it carried.

The new Minimum Standards for Snow and Ice Response specify: sidewalks cleared within 24 hours; arterials and the business district cleared when accumulation exceeds 2 inches within 12 hours; transit and school routes cleared when accumulation exceeds 3 inches within 16 hours; residential or other streets cleared when accumulation exceeds 3 inches within 24 hours; active ice formation addressed within 48 hours; and additional blowing, drifting or accumulation addressed within 48 hours. The minutes state enforcement will be undertaken by the Village Maintenance Supervisor and the Village Board Chair.

Supporters said the policy provides clear expectations for residents and staff. Maintenance staff reported ongoing work to keep equipment and the treatment plant operational; no budget amendment related to snow removal was recorded in the minutes. The minutes record that Trustee Rosekrans moved to adopt the policy and Trustee Fangmeier seconded; the motion carried.

The adopted policy appears in the meeting record as the village’s prevailing operational standard for snow and ice response and will take effect immediately; no sunset date or appeals procedure is recorded in the minutes. The board did not record any dissenting votes in the minutes.
