District Plan Commission approves Historic Splendid Valley advisory plan, forms four subcommittees

The Brighton District Plan Commission on May 28 approved the most recent Historic Splendid Valley Advisory Plan and voted 7-0 to form four subcommittees to carry out elements of the plan. Commissioner Linda Young moved the approval and Commissioner Daniel Sherman seconded.
The plan’s adoption finalizes the advisory review the commission completed before the April deadline and clears the way for focused work by smaller groups, commissioners said. The commission approved the following formal subcommittees: Marketing and Agritourism (Mark Humbert and Brett Baker); Enhancing Local Food Security (Cheryn Miller-Crock and Terry Beauman); Finance and Resource Mobilization (Linda Young and Dan Sherman); and Farm Incubator and Farmer Pipeline Support (Andrew Sword and Liz Palmer). Commissioner Cheryn Miller-Crock moved to accept the full slate and Commissioner Liz Palmer seconded; the motion carried 7-0.
Commissioner Linda Young flagged a vacant seat on the DPC and requested that the City of Brighton and Adams County begin the process to fill it; she noted the seat is assigned to the City of Brighton and therefore must be filled under the city’s recruitment process. The commission also discussed logistics for subcommittee meetings, agreeing members should coordinate meeting times that comply with open-meetings requirements and, when practicable, meet prior to regularly scheduled DPC meetings to reduce scheduling conflicts.
As part of setting priorities, commissioners agreed to prioritize outreach at the Adams County Fair this year to highlight local farms and produce; they decided not to table at Brighton’s Summerfest or Berry Patch Farm’s Strawberry Moon festival in 2026. Commissioners discussed the need for funding for flyers, maps and promotional materials; Commissioner Daniel Sherman said he will submit a budget request to the City of Brighton to help cover those materials.
The approval and subcommittee assignments followed routine procedural votes earlier in the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 4:04 PM.
