Residents urge city action on chronic drainage, ADA compliance and wastewater concerns during public comment

Several members of the public used the meeting—omment period to raise infrastructure and service concerns. Rex Pujols said his property has flooded repeatedly for 25 years because an adjoining drainage ditch maintained by or used by the city is blocked and overgrown; he asked for a site visit and for the city manager to follow up. City staff said they would reach out and verify prior communications.
Dennis Kiefer, who said he worked for the city for 25 years, urged council to oppose a proposed sale of the wastewater system to Illinois American and suggested forming a new task force to evaluate acquiring the water company instead. "Hoping that you turn down the resolution to further investigate the sale, I have a suggestion... I would gladly volunteer to be involved in a 2026 task force to at least look at this again," Kiefer said.
John McNish raised ADA compliance problems at construction sites and public ramps, urged the city to require contractors to follow court-ordered consent decrees and to include ADA compliance language in contract solicitations, and expressed concern about attorney fees and North Pekin wastewater rates.
Council directed staff to follow up where appropriate; Mr. Dossie said he would double-check prior contact on Pujols's drainage issue and staff noted a public involvement meeting for Broadway Street rehabilitation would be held June 23 at Pekin Public Library.
