The Berkeley School District 87 Board of Education approved a slate of personnel actions June 27, clearing a series of resignations, hirings and reassignments in advance of the 2026–27 school year.
The board voted to employ Laura Sullivan as assistant principal at Whitty Primary School effective July 1, 2026, following a closed-session recommendation. The board also accepted resignations reported by the administration: Haley Barland (second-grade teacher, Jefferson), Michael Perah (math teacher, MacArthur Middle School, effective June 25, 2026) and Michael Bonowski (fourth-grade teacher, Sunnyside Intermediate), among others. Motions to accept resignations carried on roll call.
Several licensed hires were approved, effective Aug. 17, 2026, pending completion of employment paperwork: Sandra Cervantes (bilingual second-grade teacher), Alyssa Manara (social worker), Marcela Perez (bilingual pre-K resource teacher), Emily Mooney (reading specialist), Josephine Deir (ELA teacher) and Ramsan Jonathan (science teacher). The board also approved leaves of absence, retirements (for example, Trina James, fifth-grade teacher, Sunnyside, intent to retire at the end of the 2028–29 school year), and numerous support-staff hirings and reassignments.
The administration noted vacancies remain, with particular need in special education and several certified positions; principals and HR staff continue candidate interviews. The board passed the personnel motions by recorded votes.
What happens next: hired staff are expected to complete employment paperwork before their start dates; HR will continue recruitment for remaining vacancies and report on staffing status at future meetings.
