Suffield commission approves high school standing‑seam roof and 216‑panel solar array

The Suffield Permanent Building Commission voted unanimously on June 16 to approve final plans for a sloped roof replacement at Suffield High School and an associated photovoltaic installation.
Matt Miller of Silver Petrucelli presented the sloped roof proposal, which calls for replacing approximately 26,000 square feet of existing asphalt shingles on sloped roof areas with a standing‑seam metal roof and associated flashing, gutters and downspouts. The plans exclude existing flat EPDM roofs. Commissioners asked about roof transitions to the flat roofs, snow‑drift mitigation, venting details and the need for a high‑temperature underlayment beneath the standing‑seam panels. Miller said minor revisions and clarifications could be incorporated during the state review and bidding process.
After discussion, Chairman Kevin Goff moved and Vice Chairman Glenn Neilson seconded a resolution certifying and approving the sloped roof final plans and project manual dated June 4, 2026. The motion passed unanimously.
Miller also presented plans for an on‑roof photovoltaic system consisting of about 216 panels mounted on the sloped roof areas. Commissioners raised concerns about the visual impact of panels on the Sheldon Street‑facing roof, conduit penetrations through roof assemblies and integration with the new standing‑seam roof. The commission agreed the PV plans could be approved subject to the same allowance for minor revisions during state review.
Chairman Goff moved and Commissioner Joe Sangiovanni seconded the motion to approve the photovoltaic project final plans dated June 4, 2026; that motion likewise passed unanimously.
The commission reviewed the anticipated schedule: bidding is expected in early July and construction is anticipated to begin during the summer, potentially extending into the start of the school year. The minutes record the next regular commission meeting scheduled for June 18, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 5:04 p.m.
