Council fills EDC, P&Z and BOA seats amid debate over past decisions
Summary
Council approved multiple appointments to the Economic Development Corporation (EDC), Planning & Zoning (PNZ) and Board of Adjustments (BOA). The Balcones Heights City Council on June 22 confirmed several appointments to boards and commissions, including the Economic Development Corporation (EDC), Planning & Zoning Commission (PNZ) and the Board of Adjustments (BOA).
For the EDC the council appointed Matt Arnett (reappointment), Susanne/Suzanne Deleon and Gloria Canut after debate: some council members argued that the prior board's decisions had contributed to significant financial obligations and questioned reappointing people associated with those decisions; other council members said applicants had applied and deserved a chance to serve and help rectify past problems.
Final votes: EDC appointments carried (3— 2); PNZ appointments were approved unanimously where recorded; BOA appointments were approved with one abstention on record. The council noted that board members serve at the council's pleasure and that appointments can be revisited if needed.
Council members urged transparency in recruitment and encouraged staff to continue outreach so all interested residents have opportunity to apply for vacancies.
