Nevada City names Sugarloaf Trailhead for longtime mayor Paul Matson

The Nevada City Council voted unanimously on June 24 to dedicate the Sugarloaf Trailhead to former Mayor and longtime councilmember Paul Matson, adopting a proclamation that recognizes Matson’s 20 years of public service and role in preserving local open space.
Mayor Klein read the proclamation and moved that the council place a plaque at the trailhead and present Matson with the proclamation; the motion passed on a roll-call vote. Paul Matson, who grew up in Wisconsin and described a lifelong love of open space, accepted the honor and thanked the council.
Why it matters: Matson was credited in the proclamation with leading or supporting key land-protection efforts in Nevada City, including work that shaped the 1986 general plan and helped preserve Hirschman’s Pond, Deer Creek environs and the Sugarloaf area. Council speakers said naming the trailhead recognizes Matson’s stewardship and longstanding contributions to local conservation and civic life.
"I'm just so proud of this community and this council," Matson said in remarks accepting the plaque, calling Hirschman's Pond and the new trail ‘‘unique assets’’ for the town. Mayor Klein and other council members praised Matson’s leadership and presented a photo opportunity and a small gift.
Next steps: Staff will arrange installation of a trailhead plaque and coordinates with the Friends of Sugarloaf for an unveiling at the trailhead.
