Beatrice board reviews condensed student handbook updates, staff guidance

The Beatrice Public Schools Board committee on Jan. 22 reviewed a condensed set of student handbook changes that administrators said are intended to fill gaps from last year’s format update while keeping the handbook concise.
An administrator presenting the changes pointed to several targeted edits now included in the handbook: an administration page updated to reflect new administrators; a new acceleration statement (grade skipping or early graduation) where appropriate; a reference to policy 5209 on school library materials and parental access; updated lunch prices and clarified language distinguishing absences during recess or physical education from general attendance absence; an insertion of policy 5601 language on asthma and anaphylaxis protocols; and a notation that the district is not responsible for personal electronic devices brought to school. “On page 12, we updated the acceleration,” the administrator said, adding the district will evaluate acceleration on a case‑by‑case basis with cognitive testing as needed.
Mr. Boyd reviewed preschool and elementary particulars: the handbook now encourages families who pack cold lunches to provide a balanced meal and states that sodas and sugary drinks are not permitted; water bottles remain allowed but are intended for water only. “Students who choose to bring a cold lunch we encourage packing a balanced meal to help them power through the rest of the day. Please note that sodas and sugary drinks are not okay,” Mr. Boyd said.
The committee also discussed classroom‑level discipline language aligned to policy 5101, which updates short‑ and long‑term suspension and expulsion procedures. Administrators said the district added clarity for when alternative assignments may replace graded activities if eligibility issues prevent a student’s participation, and clarified provider‑note language for medical absences.
Staff‑level changes were described as modest. The substitute handbook adds expectations and clarifies that paraprofessional substitutes must meet state 'highly qualified' credentialing requirements; dress‑code language was modernized for all staff handbooks; and staff were reminded that personal property is their responsibility.
The board did not take a final vote on the handbook package at the committee meeting. Administrators said final approvals will follow the normal policy review process if the board chooses to move any item forward for formal readings and adoption.
