Snowflake council buys land, approves preliminary Cottonwood Wash trail plan

The Snowflake Town Council voted Feb. 2 to purchase 32 acres from the Silver Creek Flood Control District for $22,500 and to acquire additional acreage from Taylor Snowflake Development LLC to develop trails and preserve open space.
Councilmembers said the Silver Creek parcel offers scenic views and contains flood-prone areas that limit other uses. The motion to buy the 32 acres, moved by Greg Brimhall and seconded by Bob Flake, passed unanimously with Lynn Johnson, Cory Johnson and Allison Perkins absent.
Council also approved a preliminary plan for the Cottonwood Wash trail system described as a low-elevation, social-style trail intended to improve access and ease of use. The purchase from Taylor Snowflake Development LLC was described in the meeting as roughly 72 acres in total, with about half of that area considered unusable; council approved the acquisition on a motion by Byron Lewis, seconded by Bob Flake.
To support cleanup and protect the trail corridor, council approved temporary road closures on Cimmaron Parkway and South Porter Road “until further notice,” citing illegal dumping and hazardous conditions on the dirt roads. The council said the closures will remain in effect until repairs allow reopening.
Council did not adopt a detailed construction schedule at the meeting; staff said surveying and additional engineering will continue as part of trail planning.
