Suffield — During reports at the June 15 meeting, Director Bill Hawkins distributed a document outlining proposed revisions to the zoning regulations to govern conversions of single‑family dwellings to two‑family dwellings and said he would prepare a draft text amendment for the commission’s review.
Hawkins summarized topics to be addressed in the draft, including driveway impacts, existing accessory dwelling units (ADUs), parking considerations and owner‑occupancy requirements, and said the changes aim to provide additional housing options. He also noted staff will produce a redlined version of CRCOG regulatory recommendations and incorporate updates related to recently issued FEMA floodplain requirements. Hawkins said he will consult with Commission Counsel Carl Landolina regarding potential amendments related to the State's Transit‑Oriented Community Middle Housing legislation.
Chairman Jacob Byrnes suggested that counsel conduct a training session for commission members, particularly to assist recently appointed members in meeting statutory training obligations; staff will coordinate scheduling and distribute recordings and other training resources.
No final votes were taken on the draft conversion amendments at this meeting; Hawkins indicated he would return a formal draft for the commission’s consideration.
