After VA inspection, Jay County approves engineering reviews for county home

Commissioners approved engineering reviews for the Jay County home after the Department of Veterans Affairs identified three critical issues during a facility walkthrough.
Justin Lester, director of advancement for Journey Home, told the board the VA found concern with the facility’s limestone foundation, outdated electrical wiring and a sprinkler system that was only partially functional during inspection. Lester said the VA recommended structural and electrical assessments and a review by a fire marshal or protection specialist to sign off the sprinkler system.
The board voted to authorize the electrical and structural engineering reviews “at their expense,” a motion made by Commissioner Duane Monroe and seconded by Commissioner Doug Horn; the motion passed unanimously. President Chad Aker suggested contacting the fire protection vendor to get the sprinkler system reviewed and signed off.
The minutes do not specify the engineering firms, estimated costs, or a timeline for the assessments; Lester said the county would receive a balance sheet from Journey Home with additional financial information.
