Jay County approves financial commitment for Bridge #64 federal funding application

Stephanie Klarer, assistant superintendent/ERC, told the commissioners the preliminary engineering is estimated at $301,000, with 80% expected to be reimbursed. She said about $100,000 of right-of-way work is estimated in 2028 (80% reimbursed), utility relocations are scheduled for 2030, and construction is estimated in 2031 at roughly $1.97 million, of which the county’s share would be approximately $394,000. Klarer said Bridge #64 was the last locally scored bridge with a rating of 4 or under that qualified for the federal funding program.
The board approved the financial commitment letter by unanimous vote after Doug Horn moved for approval and Chad Aker seconded.
Why this matters: the federal program would cover the majority of project costs but requires the county to certify its intent to provide the local match and to proceed through preliminary engineering and right-of-way work. The application deadline for the federal funding was reported as Dec. 1, 2025.
