Sandy City police urge e-bike riders to follow rules, warn parents on liability

Mike of the Sandy City Police Department urged residents to use electric bicycles lawfully and with consideration for pedestrians and the environment, and pointed listeners to an updated department website for guidance.

The reminder, delivered at the start of a short public message, emphasized both education and enforcement. "We want you to use ebikes. We want you to use all of this stuff uh legally and in a fun manner. Be out, enjoy the outdoors," Mike said, and noted the department has an updated online resource with rules and maps.

Mike said the department will focus on educating riders but "If we see violations while we're out and about, we will do enforcement where we need to." He also directly addressed parents: "parents, remember, you can be held liable for violations as well if you're permitting a child or a minor to use these ebikes or e- motorcycles in an illegal manner." The department did not give a web address or cite specific statutes in the message.

He closed with practical safety reminders about where e-bikes may and may not be ridden and urged users to be careful around pedestrians and respectful of the community and the environment.
