School committee approves student basketball trip to Puerto Rico, contingent on state approval

The Holyoke School Committee voted to authorize out‑of‑state travel for Holyoke middle‑school basketball teams to participate in a tournament in Puerto Rico Dec. 3–7, provided the trip receives formal approval from the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic association (MAE). The committee amended the original motion to add that condition and requested an update at the committee’s July 13 meeting.

Why it matters: Committee members raised concerns about roster uncertainty (trials occur in the fall), fundraising before MAE approval, and the need to ensure the tournament and organizers meet MAE rules. The amendment makes district fundraising and planning contingent on obtaining the state’s clearance.

During discussion, members cited a past incident at a trip involving Springfield and urged caution. Administrators said they had shared details with MAE and that MAE officials and Hall of Fame organizers were gathering more information; athletic staff and area coaches had also been consulted. Mel (identified in testimony as an administrator/athletic contact) told the committee that the district had sent MAE the event details and was awaiting confirmation: “we’ve sent them exactly what Hallfame sent us… they’re looking into it.”

The committee also discussed logistics and timing: if roster trials (held in the fall) produce transfers or late eligibility changes, a student who becomes varsity after trials could be unable to attend; members asked staff to avoid fundraising until MAE confirms the trip can proceed. The committee approved the amended motion on a roll call vote.
