Grant City staff report on emergency radios, speeding concerns and schedule a budget work session

Grant City council members received several staff updates on June 12, including emergency communications, speeding complaints and regional transportation planning, and they scheduled a 2026 budget work session for Aug. 5.
A council member said they attended Washington County emergency-management training and that the city partnered with the Washington County Emergency Management Team to obtain three allied radios for backup communications if cell service is disrupted. "We partnered with the Washington County Emergency Management Team to acquire three free radios," the speaker said, and added that Kim, Ken and the speaker will each have a radio to communicate with incident-response officials.
Council members also raised resident complaints about excessive speeding across Grant, and staff described a specific problem near the high school involving empty school buses traveling to and from the garage. The speaker said they followed up with the Montidi School District superintendent, who contacted the bus company; drivers were admonished, GPS monitoring was used and the speaker reported that complaints have dropped since the company spoke with drivers.
Staff updated the council on Washington County's Highway 96 corridor study and said they continue to provide resident feedback to the county planner; concerns cited include bicyclist crossings at the Gateway Trail and potential safety issues.
Separately, the council approved a motion to hold the 2026 budget work session at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 5, one hour before the regular meeting. The council moved, seconded and recorded assent in roll call. The meeting adjourned following the community-calendar announcements.
