Resident urges Green Isle to curb metal‑detector digging at city park

During the public comment period on Sept. 24, resident Mary told the council that people using metal detectors have been digging holes across the park, returning dirt but leaving the grass dead and creating what she called defacement of public property.
Mary said a neighbor, Diane Brown, has been documenting the activity with photographs and asked whether signs or an ordinance could be used to prevent digging. "We are having problems with metal people coming with metal detectors and digging holes through the park," she said.
Councilors responded that they would explore options, including whether an enforceable ordinance exists or could be adopted, and noted the park board could help place signage if a legal basis is found. Staff said they would research examples from other cities and bring recommendations to the next meeting.
No formal action was taken that evening; council directed staff and the park board to return with enforceable options and examples.
