The Knoxville Beer Board on June 23 approved a slate of beer-permit applications pending final documentation, postponed two applications to July and delayed a suspension-revocation hearing for Harby’s Market until early August.
Board staff reported operational details before the business portion of the meeting. Mr. Johnson said there is “still one active … suspension revocation hearing for Harby’s Market on Burnside Street,” and that “the fund sits at $286,000 and change and we have received to date $38,000 in fines.”
The board approved a string of permit applications subject to final paperwork. Applicants granted approval pending documentation included Post Column / 1951 Club (applicant James Clawson), Buffalo Head (Sevierville Avenue), Cedar Corner Market (Dixit Patel), Crafty Bastard Brewery (Tony Burton; two related items), Shibani’s Pizzeria (Jacob LeGrander) and Market Homestead / La Patrona (Veronica Gideon). Staff repeatedly noted common outstanding items: certificate of occupancy, health-department or Department of Agriculture approval, sales-tax registration and, where applicable, surrender of any existing permit.
Two applications — First Lutheran Church and School (agenda item 7A) and La Patrona (8G as requested earlier) — asked to be postponed to July; Mr. Byrd presented the requests, the board registered no objections and the postponements were granted. Two other applications, Unique Academy (6A) and Weekends (8I), were withdrawn and removed from consideration.
A compliance matter drew more discussion: owner David Ewan of Highgrove Public House acknowledged that a manager had not completed the required CAST training and asked for additional time. The board voted to allow Highgrove until the next Beer Board meeting to complete the class; Officer Presley confirmed how CAST attendance is recorded and the owner said he would attend the next available session. By contrast, representatives for Sevier Avenue Fuels and Holiday Inn reported managers recently attended CAST training and staff confirmed those businesses are currently compliant.
The board completed its agenda after handling procedural matters and the permit approvals. Several routine actions passed with no recorded objections from the membership present.
What’s next: the suspension-revocation hearing for Harby’s Market remains scheduled for early August, and applicants approved pending documentation must deliver the listed paperwork to the business tax office to obtain final permits.
