Commission shifts Cathcart CIP to 2026, green-lights volunteer repair effort for hockey boards

The Shorewood Park Commission moved on July 22 to recommend shifting the Cathcart Park capital improvement project to 2026 so the item can be considered after completion of the Parks Master Plan. Commissioner Wenner moved to recommend the change; Commissioner Sylvester seconded and the motion carried 3-0.
Commissioners reviewed a living maintenance document compiled after 2024 park tours and agreed to conduct self-guided tours — including Gideon Glen — and return notes to Parks and Recreation Director Czech before the August meeting so staff can compile updates. Chair Hirner thanked staff for progress on maintenance and tree plantings.
The commission also discussed the deteriorating condition of hockey boards. Council Liaison Sanschagrin reported resident complaints and Chair Hirner proposed organizing a community volunteer event similar to a prior effort to repaint and replace boards. The Commission agreed by consensus to direct staff to research a volunteer event, including possible participation by Sentenced to Serve and community volunteers.
No budget appropriation was approved at the meeting; the Cathcart CIP timing change was a recommendation to staff and Council pending Master Plan output. The Commission adjourned at 9:27 p.m.
