Starmont board approves routine trips, plans and up to $25,000 for wastewater pumps

The Starmont Community School District Board on Sept. 8 approved a series of routine administrative motions including student activities, program plans, shared services and facilities work.
Key approvals included authorization to spend up to $25,000 to replace the district's wastewater pumps; approval for the FFA chapter to attend the National Convention in Indianapolis; approval of a Fine Arts day trip to Hancher Auditorium and a recreational stop in Cedar Rapids on March 28; and authorization to seek snow removal bids. The board also approved the district's K–12 LAU (English Learners) plan, out-of-district bus routes, and an early graduation request contingent on completion of graduation requirements. All motions recorded in these items carried unanimously after Vicki Althoff joined the meeting, with earlier consent items approved 4-0 prior to her arrival.
The board approved sharing a librarian with West Central for one to two days per month on an hourly-plus-mileage basis. Consent-agenda personnel actions included several hires (including McKenna Schaufenbuel as National Honor Society sponsor and Duane Lowry as head boys basketball coach) and volunteer coach approvals. A bid to sell obsolete equipment (a Snapper lawnmower) was also approved.
Motions were typically made by board members Tony Recker or Doug Puffett and seconded by board colleagues; recorded tallies in the minutes show votes of 4-0 on items before Althoff's arrival and 5-0 afterward. Superintendent Robert Busch and school principals provided routine reports; Modus Engineering representatives briefly reviewed building walkthrough findings for board consideration.
The board's approvals clear the way for scheduled student events and planned facility work; the superintendent noted continuing work on a bond website with the Donovan Group.
