Keota administrators report on testing, facilities planning and student activities
Summary
District leaders reported staffing plans and facility upgrades for SY27, 4th graders took NAEP testing, about half of students passed a civics pilot, preschool enrollment estimates were shared and staff reported on recent maintenance and activities.
Superintendent Harper, principals and staff briefed the board on testing, facilities planning, staffing and student activities during the regular meeting.
Superintendent Harper updated the board on staffing for 2026-27 and on repairs and upgrades to facilities and operations. No motions were associated with the update.
High School Principal Heather Rosewall reported that students Levi Lyle and Memphis Jaeger are publishing an article in Neighbors Magazine on beavers and waterways. She said roughly 50% of students passed a civics pilot test and several were within 10 percentage points; ISASP testing is scheduled for March 9-12 and work on the course catalog has begun.
Elementary Principal and Curriculum Director Milledge reported that 22 fourth graders took either a NAEP math or reading test this week; these tests will be used for "The Nation's Report Card" for fourth, eighth and twelfth grades. Milledge said the Keota CSD Facilities Task Force met with consulting firms Denovo and Encite to plan next steps and toured the school building. She also reported strong community support in the KES Pantry Drive; donated items were delivered to the United Church of Faith. Enrollment estimates given: three-year-old preschool ~10-12 students, four-year-old preschool 19 students and kindergarten about 21 students.
Activities Director Stout reported a strong speech season with three groups named Outstanding and one group advancing to the All-State Festival in Ames. The EagleRock season continues, Jack Greiner is running for a district officer position, and district basketball schedules were noted.
Business Manager Amy Greiner said she attended the ISFIS budget workshop and the Department of Management certified budget review in Fairfield, is working to complete the SY27 budget, and has reconciled January bank statements and board financial reports. Custodian Brian Donaldson reported multiple sewer repairs this month (replacement of some cast iron pipes), radon testing that did not require mitigation, and near completion of lighting and solar work.
These reports provide the board with operational context as it authorized financial and program decisions for SY27 earlier in the meeting. The board's next meeting is March 12, 2026.
