Danvers moves ahead on landfill shaping to prepare site for town solar array

Stephen King, the town engineer, told the Danvers Select Board on Feb. 3 that Phase 1 of the Danvers Landfill Soil Project will focus on shaping and grading Landfill Area 1 by importing material to fill long-standing depressions and create a stable base for a planned solar photovoltaic (PV) array. The project site is the largest section of a 52.5-acre property off Route 1 that abuts Peabody and includes capped landfill areas, the transfer station and a flare station.
King said the presentation covered the site’s history, permitting requirements, three years of soil operations, a cost analysis, and a financial summary, and outlined next steps toward completing the grading work and moving forward with solar development. He described Phase 1 as critical to creating a renewable energy asset intended to expand the town’s long-term sustainability and financial returns.
The presentation did not finalize a construction schedule or list a completion date; King described permitting and financing as ongoing elements that will determine timing. The Board heard the technical rationale for importing material to address depressions and stabilize the surface, and that subsequent solar installation depends on satisfactory permitting, completion of the grading work, and funding.
The Board did not take a formal vote on the solar project during the meeting; staff will bring further details about permitting, cost estimates and timelines as they are developed.
