Council approves replacement packages for fire department air packs, turnout gear and radios

Council members approved three equipment purchase packages for the city's fire department after a staff presentation on the department's replacement schedule.
Jeremy, the presenter introduced for the fire item, told the council the department planned a phased replacement to avoid a large one-time expense, replacing two air packs this year along with four air bottles and a service package required to secure quoted pricing. "They will go through the packs. They will . . . service the respirators each year and do any repairs," Jeremy said, describing the annual certification and maintenance contract.
Jeremy also said the city seeks to replace five sets of turnout gear this year because several sets are reaching the 10-year NFPA service life; that package was estimated to cost about $16,000 and excludes boots, helmets and gloves, which will be purchased separately. The third package would replace six radios and associated batteries; Jeremy said a $10,000 grant from FM Bank reduces the net impact on the operating budget.
A councilmember moved to approve all three purchases together; another councilmember seconded and the motion carried by voice vote with no opposition recorded in the meeting record.
Next steps: staff said the service package will be charged to maintenance lines where appropriate and that replacement of additional consumables (boots, helmets, gloves) will follow in separate procurements as budgeted.
