The Green Isle City Council on Tuesday opened debate on a proposed truck-route ordinance (Ordinance 2024-3) but tabled the first reading after members said they needed engineering plans and proof-of-construction to justify differing weight limits on new and older street segments.
Council members discussed whether to keep a townwide four-ton restriction or raise certain newer sections — including a recently built portion of Western Street — to six tons. Members said they have not found the original plans or documentation that would justify higher limits, and some suggested taking a core sample on the newer segment to verify pavement depth and load capacity.
The discussion focused on two points: locating original street plans and getting technical confirmation from the city engineer or a pavement core. Council members said the engineer had not offered to inspect streets without plans and that, absent documentation, the council should default to the tonnage it has used historically.
Amy, a council member, supported moving the new Western addition to a higher tonnage if documentation confirmed it was built to that standard and said she would be comfortable proceeding with a first reading once the map and supporting records were added.
After debate, a motion was made to table the ordinance’s first reading until the next meeting so staff can continue searching for plans and supply the council with a proposed map and tonnage recommendations. The motion carried on a voice vote.
The council did not adopt any changes to the town’s truck-route map at the meeting. The item will return for further consideration after staff and the council obtain clearer documentation or technical confirmation, including the option of core sampling the newer roadway if necessary.
