Residents urge traffic-safety fixes; public works waits on sewer televising estimate

Residents raised multiple traffic- and infrastructure-related concerns during the Lake City Council meeting on Aug. 4, and city staff updated the council on ongoing public-works work.
Resident Deb Savage asked the council about one-way signage on Center Street and about installing parking stops in the city lot across from Cornerstone Suites. Resident Shari Hanks asked the council to consider a yield sign at Washington and Douglas after several near misses and requested a handicap parking space in front of the library. The council said it would take those requests under advisement.
Resident Sheenie Janssen asked whether Public Works could install a washing machine at its building so crews would not need to use residents’ machines after exposure to feces or other material; council members indicated agreement to explore the request.
Public Works Director Zach Janssen reported he had received one estimate and was waiting on a second for televising sewer lines and said that the work could potentially be paid for with a USDA grant if the city secures one. Keith Lampe noted that Elaine Lietz will assist with the bandstand fundraising committee and Park Board efforts.
Sheriff Pat Riley gave a service update under the 28E agreement, reporting "46 calls for service and 50 town checks." Council reviewed solid waste fee expense and revenue information but took no action on the fee structure at this meeting.
The council also approved nominations for the Thank a Citizen Award for Duane and Elmer Sporleder and received a claims report for the period July 18–31, 2025 showing an accounts payable total of $129,873.59, payroll checks of $24,532.46 and a report total of $154,406.05.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:53 p.m.; the next regular council meeting is scheduled for Aug. 18, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. in City Hall Chambers.
