Council approves lot split to allow Habitat for Humanity build

The City of Goodhue approved a lot split to allow Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity to build at a parcel discussed in the Aug. 28 council meeting. Council members questioned utilities access, responsibility for curb stops and a nearby utility pole that may need moving at the owner’s expense; staff and the applicant said the lot provides alley access and room for turnarounds.

‘We would want access from the alley so we access the alley or the garage from the alley,’ an attendee said while outlining proposed lot layout and utility connections. Council members noted trees on the property could require removal as part of demolition and discussed trimming responsibilities if the group acquires the parcel.

Council also heard that the local school’s construction classes could take part in building the homes and that volunteers would help complete work during the school year. After members confirmed that utility connections and site access were workable, a council member moved to approve the lot split and another seconded. The motion passed on a voice vote and the council recorded the motion as carried.

The approval permits the city and Habitat for Humanity to proceed with the subdivision step needed to begin building; the council did not record a roll-call vote in the transcript. Next steps discussed included coordinating with Xcel on the overhead-to-underground service and confirming exact utility stub locations so each new dwelling can be served from the curb stop.
