Ireton council adopts two resolutions, appoints city attorney; directs sanitation contractor to return

At the Jan. 19 meeting, the Ireton City Council approved two formal resolutions and made a personnel appointment.

Resolution 26-01, naming the Hawarden Independent/Ireton Examiner as Ireton’s official newspaper, passed on a roll-call vote of 5-0 after a motion by Ten Napel and a second by Mosterd. The council also approved Resolution 26-02, setting the 2026 IRS mileage reimbursement rate at $0.725 per mile for personal vehicle use; that motion was made by Eisma and seconded by Anderson and passed 5-0.

Council then moved to appoint Jenny Cleveringa as City Attorney. The motion, moved by Mosterd and seconded by Anderson, passed 5-0.

On the contracts side, council members extensively discussed the upcoming garbage contract renewal due March 31. After deliberation, the council moved that O.C. Sanitation attend the next council meeting to discuss future contract terms and asked the clerk to consult surrounding towns about their arrangements; the motion passed 5-0. Separately, Richardson reported that sewer-lining bids were not ready and the council tabled that item until the next meeting.

The meeting also records distribution of the annual DNR water report and the 2025 cemetery report and the presentation of the employee wage report, which lists individual pay amounts (payroll checks total $8,622.41; notable annual salaries include J. Richardson at $65,142.61 and L. Lockhorst at $40,858.20). With no further business, the council adjourned by unanimous vote.
