Township to ask PennDOT to allow additional crosswalk signs at Spring Creek Road

Township staff asked the board at the June 22 workshop to authorize a request to PennDOT to install additional signage for the pedestrian crosswalk on Spring Creek Road at Heritage Drive near Creamery Park.
The township traffic engineer provided required sketches and staff have drafted a letter to PennDOT requesting permission to install six signs — advance warning signs, directional arrows and fluorescent yellow pedestrian crossing signs — to improve visibility at the crossing. "PennDOT doesn't take obligations to their roadway for the most part," Bruce explained, and staff told the board that if PennDOT approves the installations the township would accept responsibility to purchase, erect and maintain those signs.
Commissioners asked whether the signs would include lighting; staff confirmed the signs are standard fluorescent pedestrian signs without lights. The group also discussed sidewalk gaps on the north side of Heritage Drive and broader corridor safety and drivability; a commissioner noted increased nearby development could raise traffic volumes and recommended keeping the corridor on staff’s radar for future planning.
Staff said the signs are already ordered and that they plan to route the PennDOT request and, if approved, include an agenda item recording the township's obligation to maintain the signage.
