Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District outlines Wolbachia male‑release pilot to reduce Aedes aegypti in Livermore

Liz Martinez of the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District and Dr. Eric Hos Stapleton, the district lab director, presented a mosquito‑reduction pilot to the Livermore City Council on June 22 that would release male Aedes aegypti carrying Wolbachia into selected neighborhoods.
"All male mosquitoes do not bite and they feed exclusively on nectar and fruit juices," Martinez said, explaining the program’s public‑health premise. Dr. Eric Hos Stapleton described how the released males mate with local females and that resulting eggs are inviable: "the eggs that the female mosquitoes lay do not hatch," he said, attributing the effect to Wolbachia carried by the males.
County staff said the invasive Aedes aegypti was first found in the county in 2024 near the Pleasanton fairgrounds and later detected in Pleasanton, Livermore, Fremont and Dublin in 2025. The district called the effort an "innovative mosquito reduction program" and said it will use a commercially produced WB1 male mosquito product registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and approved for use in California by the Department of Pesticide Regulation.
Presenters emphasized environmental safety and species specificity: Martinez said Wolbachia "cannot be spread from mosquitoes to people, pets, other animals or the environment" and that it is targeted to the Aedes aegypti species. The district also described non‑chemical measures and resident outreach — door hangers, brochures and partnerships with HOAs and the UC Master Gardeners — and said it offers Gambusia mosquito fish deliveries for qualifying ponds.
Council members asked about operational details and outreach. When asked whether Gambusia could be delivered to a resident with a water feature, presenters replied yes and described a coordination process for delivery. Staff said the pilot will initially evaluate one west and one east Livermore area, using local abundance data to select sites.
The presentation concluded with staff stressing public information and neighbor engagement. Next steps include continued coordination with Livermore staff, neighborhood outreach and providing more information to residents about how the pilot would be implemented and how to reduce backyard breeding sites.
