The Eldridge board reopened discussion on whether to permit PVC (C900) water mains on Sept. 23. Members reviewed research pro and con, discussed accelerated-aging studies, and noted some jurisdictions use the material while others do not.
Concerns cited included potential plastic leaching over time in chlorinated, corrosive environments, the complexity and duration of repairs when long segments fail, and a lack of local experience and training for installation and repair. One board member cited examples of recent ductile-iron failures and said proper wrapping of joints remains critical regardless of pipe material.
A motion to approve use of PVC mains was made but did not receive a second and therefore failed. Board members asked staff for more comparative data, vendor performance information, and concrete cost/long-term lifecycle analysis before taking future action.
