Madison County authorizes relocation of graves at Levi Park Cemetery ahead of reservoir work

Madison County’s Fiscal Court voted Tuesday to authorize the permanent removal and relocation of graves at Levi Park Cemetery to accommodate plans to raise the pool level of a nearby reservoir. The resolution, filed under KRS 381-755 and 901 KAR 5 090, directs that most graves be moved west of Radford Hollow Road and identifies specific reinterment locations.
Jill, a county staff member who presented the measure, said the county received a petition involving the property owner (Berea College), the City of Berea and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service asking the court to authorize the relocations. The resolution lists named graves to be reinterred in the Cates Cemetery, Silver Creek Cemetery and Pilot Knob Cemetery and delegates authority to the judge executive to execute required documents.
Magistrates and staff described outreach to descendants and said many had agreed to alternate burial sites. One magistrate thanked the project team and noted that, for eight graves planned for Pilot Knob Cemetery, city staff had agreed to involve descendants in the physical reinterment and ensure proper handling. Berea Municipal staff and engineers attended the meeting to answer questions.
The resolution states that 60 days had passed since public notice was published in the Berea Citizen on April 24, 2024, and that relocation procedures will follow the statutory requirements referenced in the resolution. The court moved, seconded and approved the measure by roll call.
The court did not specify a contractor timetable at the meeting. The resolution takes effect on the date of passage and authorizes county officials to execute the relocation and related documents.
