Principal Betty Chung of College Park Elementary presented the district’s Mandarin district plan and described how the program is moving from planning to classroom implementation.
Chung said the district completed the planning and installation phases this year and focused on building common instructional resources, teacher professional learning, collaboration structures and thematic units developed with the Stamford World Language Project. She said next year will be an "initial implementation" phase in which teachers will use newly adopted thematic units and consistent instructional practices across classrooms. "Each and every student who enters into our district's Mandarin program...should not only leave speaking two languages, but they're thinking critically, appreciating different cultures, and feeling prepared to succeed in a global community," Chung said.
Chung highlighted supports provided this year: a dual‑language TOSA, instructional coaching, a summer professional development sequence for Mandarin teachers and systems to strengthen assessment and reporting. She reported recognition numbers for student bilingual attainment: roughly 55 fifth‑grade students met bilingual proficiency criteria and about 230 eighth‑grade students received awards tied to program progress.
Trustees thanked Principal Chung and signaled interest in a follow‑up presentation in September or October to show classroom practice and next‑phase outcomes.
