The board moved and seconded a resolution to continue participation in the district’s instructional support levy (motion moved by Deborah Williamson, seconded by Dave Eastburn); the resolution carried. Board members had noted the public hearing on the levy earlier in the meeting and reported no public comments had been submitted.
On facilities work, the board approved a change order for ACE Electric to complete unexpected electrical repairs discovered during the high-school ceiling project. Board discussion identified the wiring as old and lacking a ground; a member said crews found wire that appeared to date to 1939 and was cloth-wrapped. Staff said an initial higher estimate was negotiated down to roughly $11,000 to bring the work up to code. The board voted to approve the change order.
The board also approved a package of policy actions tied to recent legislation and housekeeping. Members voted to adopt revisions required by state law, waive the second reading for those policies (including a cell-phone policy), and delete one regulation (6051R1, an instructional-materials selection regulation) that the policy committee said duplicated other documents and contained confusing wording.
Board members emphasized monitoring the district’s finances in light of a separate finance-committee report: the committee recommended a contingency plan to use up to $250,000 of excess flex-fund carryover to cover a federal funding hold that threatens before- and after-school programming. That recommendation was presented during committee reports rather than as a board motion for immediate approval.
The meeting closed with superintendent updates highlighting a new director of operations hire and summer-school and professional-development activities.
Next steps: the board will incorporate committee follow-up items as requested and monitor federal funding reviews and any budget impacts during the August year-end budget status update.
