Jenny Brown appointed to Portage Township School Board

The Portage Township School Board voted to appoint Jenny Brown to the District 1 board seat on a motion and roll-call vote at its June meeting. Brown, the sole applicant for the vacancy that runs through Dec. 31, 2027, introduced herself to trustees and described her local ties, including three children in the district and a prior school board candidacy.

Brown told the board she wants to “be an ambassador to encourage people that Porter schools are good,” and said she brings an open-minded approach, listening skills and a desire to work as part of a team. Trustees praised her community perspective after the vote and welcomed her to the board.

The board administered the oath of office at the meeting. Chair comments indicated Brown may abstain from votes where a conflict of interest exists or where family members are directly affected. The appointment followed a publicly announced application process and an on-the-record interview intended to provide transparency to the community.

The board’s action was procedural: trustees moved, seconded and carried the appointment by roll call. Trustee votes were recorded in the meeting minutes. The board did not deliberate further, citing the single-candidate process, and completed the swearing-in during the same session.
