Union City Borough Council on July 23 unanimously approved a $5,000 contract with Mansfield to repair and reconnect storm sewer piping at a sinkhole in Municipal Lot #1, with the borough supplying pipe and fittings at an estimated additional cost of $5,000.
The decision followed a review of competing quotes: McLallen Construction submitted $6,800 and Mansfield $5,000. Councilor James Kerns moved to accept Mansfield’s bid, and Councilor Steadman seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips briefed the council on dye-testing that showed stormwater entering sanitary lines near Municipal Lot #1 and said the crew is arranging camera inspections further toward the Salvation Army to locate the failure. “It is getting into the sanitary lines that go to Municipal Lot #1. He is getting it looked at and having cameras go through it,” Phillips reported.
The motion authorizes Mansfield to perform the repair, with the borough providing the pipe and fittings; council stipulated the work proceed “pending no other problems,” a caveat the council said is intended to limit unexpected extra costs.
Next steps: Streets staff will oversee the camera inspection and schedule the repair work with Mansfield once inspections confirm the affected pipe segments and scope. No funding source other than the borough’s general funds was specified in the meeting minutes.
