Union City council agrees to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation with EACOG support

Union City Borough Council on July 9 authorized staff to proceed with the public meeting and resolution necessary to apply for the Broadband Ready Communities designation and asked the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) to serve as the borough’s municipal broadband champion.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells described the program and recommended passing a resolution allowing EACOG to complete the application and act on behalf of the borough. Councilor Kerns moved and Councilor Joyce seconded proceeding with the required public meeting and the resolution; the motion carried unanimously.
Wells said the designation creates an opportunity for additional internet service providers to consider serving the borough and that the borough’s permitting requirements are within the program’s recommendations. The council did not adopt the formal written resolution at the meeting but agreed to proceed with the public-meeting step required by the program.
The action directs staff to schedule the public meeting and to coordinate with EACOG on the application process; no funding commitments were recorded in the minutes.
