The Sigourney City Council approved the first reading July 16 of an ordinance to regulate mobile food units in the city.
Council member Clark presented the draft ordinance (Title VI — Physical Environment, Chapter 13), which includes definitions, permit and application requirements, operational requirements, prohibited locations, enforcement and penalties, and a fee schedule. A key provision requires food trucks to obtain permission from brick-and-mortar restaurants to operate within 150 feet of those establishments.
Clark told the council, “The city currently does not have a food truck ordinance or policy,” and explained the public safety committee’s recommended structure. Council member Iosbaker asked whether the ordinance would take effect before the remainder of the current farmers market season; councilors said implementation would be planned with the market calendar in mind.
The council voted unanimously to approve the ordinance’s first reading. The measure will return for subsequent readings and final adoption before becoming enforceable.
