Five speakers representing Explore Academy and families addressed the board during public comment on June 18, urging the board to allow Explore Academy to continue operating at 2190 North Canal Street and praising the school's student growth and family engagement.
Parents described their children's academic and social gains, small-school community benefits and consistent communication from the site. Several speakers said the site was a supportive learning environment that helped children's attendance and social-emotional growth. A community member cited the school's ability to build family trust and consistent, meaningful outreach.
Lloyd Busher Rees, identified as president of Explore Academy's volunteer board, summarized student-achievement metrics the school reported to the board: enrollment for 2026-27 of 105 students with 81 in-district, reading and mathematics gains for many pupils, and parent-led engagement such as movie nights and a parent action committee. He also said Explore Academy had sent a March 4, 2026, letter asserting the district erred in its Prop 39 enrollment projections and that the school's legal representative is exploring remedies.
Board members thanked speakers for their testimony. No immediate decision was made in public comment; any facility or Prop 39 questions will be handled by staff and brought to a future agenda as appropriate.
