Assembly accepts resignation of Assembly Member Dave Johnson, sets vacancy timeline

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly voted June 25 to accept the resignation of Assembly Member Dave Johnson effective June 25, 2026, declare the seat vacant and direct the clerk to advertise the vacancy.

According to the clerk's report to the assembly, Johnson submitted his resignation on June 4, 2026. The clerk said the position's term does not end until October 2027, and therefore more than 90 days remain in the term. "On June 4th, 2026, Assembly Member Johnson submitted his resignation letter from the Assembly effective today," the clerk said.

The clerk told the assembly the vacancy will be advertised in the Kodiak Daily Mirror. Applications will be accepted starting Saturday, June 27 through July 11, 2026, and interviews are scheduled for July 16; the clerk said the assembly must make an appointment within 30 days after declaring the seat vacant under borough code.

Assembly members offered brief remarks thanking Johnson for his service. Assembly Member Whiteside said Johnson's participation on local boards and in the assembly had been constructive; Assembly Member Woods praised Johnson's willingness to ask challenging questions.

The assembly recorded a roll-call vote to accept the resignation. The clerk recorded six affirmative votes (Mr. Ames, Mr. Gardner, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Smiley, Mr. Whiteside and Mr. Woods), and the motion passed.

The assembly indicated it will advertise the vacancy immediately and has scheduled applicant interviews for July 16; if the assembly is prepared then it may appoint a replacement that evening, or call a special meeting the following week to complete the appointment.
