San Carlos hears mosquito‑control overview and annual fire report

Casey Stevenson, operations director for the San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District, summarized county surveillance of roughly 8,000 potential mosquito sources, the district’s response to invasive mosquitoes and West Nile virus monitoring (including dead‑bird reporting), yellow‑jacket nest removal services in San Carlos (about 100 removals in 2025), and free rodent inspection services. Stevenson encouraged residents to report biting mosquitoes and dead birds and described an upcoming open house in Burlingame where the public can see the district’s lab, drone, and equipment.
Deputy Fire Chief Sean Buford presented the fire department’s annual report covering suppression, emergency medical services, community risk reduction, inspections, and public education. Buford highlighted the department’s transition to a community risk reduction model, renewal of a high ISO classification, CERT outreach and preparedness messaging, and collaboration with county hazard‑mitigation planning. Councilmembers asked about CERT enrollment and program access; Buford directed residents to the department website and staff for application details.
No council action was required on either presentation; both were informational.
