The Brown Deer School Board approved adding 13 open-enrollment seats for the 2026–27 school year to accommodate students currently in the district under tuition waivers. Administrators said the increase moves the open-enrollment allocation from 100 to 113 seats and is intended to keep students who were residents and moved during the year on district rosters under waiver rules.
Officials explained two separate waiver processes: a summer-move waiver that allows students to remain for one additional year and the open-enrollment lottery for which waiver holders are prioritized. Staff said the district is terminating 15 students’ open enrollment due to habitual truancy but retaining 13 students covered by waivers; they described waivers as the first wave in the open-enrollment lottery.
A board member asked whether the arithmetic left the district with 98 seats; administrators explained the numbers are a wash because families move out and others move in over the summer. The motion to approve the 13 open-enrollment waivers passed 4–0.
