Hilliard youths expand 'Food for the Fourth' drive to collect summer meals donations

Charlie Owlsley, a Hilliard resident, told the City Council that he and his brother Sam started a summer food-drive called Food for the Fourth to address a drop in pantry donations when school is out.
"In our initial year, we collected around 800 pounds of donations and $800 in cash donations," Charlie Owlsley said, and asked parade attendees "to consider bringing along a can or two or a cash donation" to the Hilliard Fourth of July parade.
The brothers said volunteers will walk the parade route with the food pantry truck and a pickup truck about 15 minutes before the parade begins, with a police escort to gather donations. They also said several local businesses have agreed to host collection boxes through early July and provided an email for contact: foodforthefourthhilliard@gmail.com.
President Cole and other council members thanked the Owlsleys for their leadership and encouraged community support; Cole later invited the youths to return to a future meeting to report on results.
The council meeting record shows no formal action was required; the Owlsleys' appeal was offered during the public-comment period and council members publicly praised the effort.
