Verona council updates weed ordinance, trims Range Trail speed limit and adjusts Park Lane parking

The Verona Common Council on June 22 approved multiple ordinances affecting property maintenance, traffic and parking.

Ordinance 26-1100 revised code sections to remove references to an appointed 'weed commissioner' that the city no longer uses, clarified responsibilities for weed abatement (building inspection and public works), standardized notice timelines to 15 days, and updated state statutory citations (Wisconsin Statutes, including sections referenced in discussion such as 66.0517 and 66.0627). Staff and councilors discussed using the DNR invasive species list for future updates and decided to refer more detailed species-list questions to staff and legal review. The council adopted the ordinance by voice vote.

The council also approved ordinance 26-1101 to reduce the speed limit on Range Trail (all segments inside city limits) from 35 mph to 25 mph after discussion about extent and safety; the speed limit on Locust Drive was discussed but left to a future, data-driven review. Council members said the posted reduction applies to Range Trail segments inside city limits and that staff will provide additional traffic-safety analysis where needed.

Parking on Park Lane was changed in two steps: an ordinance to restrict parking for 54 feet (approximately three stalls) to improve turning radii at the Main Street intersection and a companion ordinance updating two-hour parking extents. Staff said signage will be relocated and the city will notify nearby businesses.

All measures passed by voice vote during the June 22 meeting.
